Cylindrical Locks Resources

A cylindrical lock is a bored lockset whose chassis passes through a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and drives a latch through a 1 inch edge bore, accepting lever or knob trim and conventional or interchangeable cores. We install, repair, rekey and replace cylindrical locksets across Washington DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland, with 25 years of licensed, insured and bonded service.

Inside a Cylindrical Lockset

ANSI/BHMA A156.2 governs bored locks, and a cylindrical lockset is the Series 4000 chassis that standard covers. The chassis carries the spring cage, spindle and retractor inside the cross bore, while a separate deadlatch slides into the edge bore and throws into the strike. Through-bolts clamp the outside and inside trim to the door, and the cylinder seats in the outside lever or knob.

Most commercial doors carry the 161 prep: 2-1/8 inch cross bore, 1 inch latch bore and 2-3/4 inch backset. Grade 1 chassis handle the corridor traffic in District of Columbia office suites, and we fit them with 6-pin SC1 conventional cylinders or SFIC and LFIC cores.

Advantages of Cylindrical Locksets

Because the mechanism lives in the cross bore, a cylindrical lockset installs in the 161 prep without the pocket a mortise lock demands, and swaps out in under an hour after damage or a function change. Tubular locks share the bore but lack commercial retractor strength.

Grade 1 chassis are tested to one million cycles under A156.2, the 2-3/4 inch backset fits most commercial doors, and interchangeable cores let you rekey without pulling the trim. Ready to upgrade a tired lockset? We install same visit.

Common Applications for Cylindrical Locks

Cylindrical locksets run most interior commercial doors we service: office suites, school classrooms and storerooms, multifamily unit entries, medical offices and government facilities across Northern Virginia. The same chassis carries passage, privacy, entrance, classroom and storeroom functions, so one prep serves an entire floor.

They are the wrong choice on high-abuse exterior doors and openings that need a deadbolt and latch in one body, where a mortise lock fits. Not sure which format your door needs? We survey it free.

Not Sure Which Lockset Your Door Needs?

One prep, five functions, three grades: the right cylindrical lock depends on the door and the traffic. We survey it, confirm the fit and quote it free.

Common Cylindrical Lock Failures We See

The latch stops retracting fully when the retractor wears or the spindle bends, so the door needs lifting to open. The cylinder spins inside the lever when the retainer clip backs out or the housing screws strip, and the key turns nothing. The chassis rotates on the door when through-bolts loosen or the cross bore was drilled oversize.

On arrival we check latch throw, then spindle and retractor engagement, then through-bolt torque and bore fit. Locked out? Our mobile units respond 24/7. Call (240) 345-1455 in Maryland or (202) 800-2622 in Washington DC and NOVA.

Cylindrical Lock Repair & Replacement Techniques

A non-retracting latch gets a new retractor or spindle from our trucks; a spinning cylinder gets a new retainer and screws. A rotating chassis takes fresh through-bolts or a retrofit plate over an oversize bore. Repair wins on a Grade 1 chassis when parts exist; a cracked housing means replacement.

Cylindrical lock replacement follows attack damage, discontinued parts or wrong function. Each cylindrical lock installation matches backset, grade and keyway so it drops into the 161 prep without new drilling, rekeyed to your master system. We measure, match, install and test egress before leaving; our in-house door expert fixes alignment same visit. Estimates are free.
