Key Control Cylinders Technical Guide

A key control cylinder is a pin tumbler or sidebar cylinder whose keyway and blanks are restricted to authorized distribution, with every cut governed by a signed authorization record. King Locksmiths has maintained these systems across the DMV for 25 years. This reference covers construction, failure modes and keying.

Key Control Cylinder Overview

The housing is conventional: mortise on a 1.150 inch by 32 TPI thread, rim, key-in-knob, or interchangeable core with control lug. Plug, bible and chambers follow standard pin tumbler architecture.

The restriction lives in the keyway. A utility patent, twenty years from filing, protects the profile or a moving key element. A sidebar driven by finger pins, or bottom pins that must rotate before the sidebar clears, adds a second locking dimension. Six chambers are typical, seven in SFIC, with hardened inserts at the shear line across Maryland institutional stock.

Key Control Cylinder Failure Modes

Three patterns dominate. Lost keys, where no blank exists outside the authorized channel, so recovery means decoding and repinning. Master system wear, where successive additions introduce cross-keying or worn master wafers let a change key operate cylinders outside its group.

Attack damage is the third. A drilled plug shears the finger pins, and a prised housing deforms the control lug on interchangeable cores. Both are replacements. Diagnosis starts with decoding the bitting against the authorization file.

Keying and Retrofit on Key Control Cylinders

Keyed alike, master keying and construction keying are all supported. The bitting chart must respect the Maximum Adjacent Cut Specification and treat the sidebar as an extra keying dimension. SFIC cores in the A2 system pin on .0125 inch increments with a separate control shear line.

Retrofit checks are length against door thickness, thread engagement, cam or tailpiece clearance, and door prep. Standard housings drop into mortise locksets, exit device trims and lever sets without new machining.

How King Locksmiths Handles Key Control Cylinders

Restricted hardware is only as controlled as its records. Our practice rests on verification, correct pinning, and 25 years of documented key systems.

Keyway Verified Before Pinning

Keyway family, housing format, pin count and patent status are confirmed from the spec sheet before any blank is cut.

Ratings Quoted By Part Number

ANSI/BHMA A156.5 grades and UL 437 listings belong to part numbers, read from current manufacturer documentation, never inferred from the keyway.

Bitting Charts Kept Closed

Every change, master and control key is logged against the signed authorization file, so the chart reflects keys that actually exist.

Doors Checked With Cylinders

Our in-house door expert verifies alignment and strike fit, since a binding door wears any cylinder.

Does a restricted keyway make a key control cylinder high security?

No. Attack resistance comes from the sidebar, inserts and a UL 437 listing, not the keyway.

Blanks can be made openly, so treat the system as an open keyway from that date.

No. Keyed alike works only within one restricted keyway.

Yes. We pin A2 cores and maintain the authorization file.
